NoSQL: Scaling Beyond Traditional SQL with Cassandra
Presented by John Sanda
Abstract:
Architectures that rely on the RDBMS for storing large amounts of data,
particularly those with write-intensive workloads, face scalability
challenges. While NoSQL data stores have their advantages, making the
transition comes with a number of challenges including data migration,
integration with existing technology stacks, and management tooling. In
this session, John Cassandra will present the process through which RHQ
adopted Cassandra as a data store that resulted in a more robust, scalable
monitoring solution that does not compromise the overall manageability of
RHQ itself. Presenter will highlight key features, implemented using
existing capabilities of RHQ, that reduce to the greatest extent possible
the operational complexities of managing a new data store. He will also
discuss the integration of Cassandra into a mature technology stack, with
an emphasis on essential libraries and tools. RHQ is an open source
management and monitoring solution for JBoss middleware. Monitoring,
alerting, and provisioning are some of its key features that enable users
to efficiently and effectively manage complex environments.
Bio:
John is a senior software engineer at Red Hat, where he has been working
for the past eight years.
He has spent five of those years working on the open source project RHQ and
the downstream product,
JBoss Operations Network. He holds an M.S. in computer science from Clemson
University.
Agenda:
6:30 - 7:00 PM -- Meet, Talk, Pizza
7:00 - 7:15 -- JUG Business and Announcements
7:15 - 8:15 -- Presentation
8:15 - 8:30 -- Discussion with Presenter
